A new study commissioned by the U.S. Department of Defense and published in the Journal of Trauma indicates that soldiers who’ve experienced physical trauma or combat-related loss are at increased risk of depression and anxiety for up to 10 years after their service. “This study adds to the growing body of evidence that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often continues after a soldier’s discharge from active duty,” said Dr. Thomas Rees, associate medical director at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Baltimore.

“PTSD is a debilitating and often debilitating disorder that often presents as severe depression, anxiety, and/or fatigue, but we still don’t fully know why and what to do about it after soldiers have returned from war, and whether we can effectively treat those disorders after the soldier has left the military,” said Rees.

The study surveyed approximately 13,000 soldiers with the first and second PTSD diagnoses within three years of their discharge from active duty. Of the 18% of soldiers who’d experienced a traumatic event in the first six months after their discharge, the researchers found that:

Nearly 40% of patients experienced symptoms of PTSD as described by Veterans Administration (VA) doctors, either before or after their discharge from service.

Of those veterans who were currently struggling with PTSD, nearly 19% had developed a second-degree PTSD diagnosis over that six month period.

More than 80% reported symptoms of a secondary condition, such as depression, sleep problems, and emotional numbness.

Of course, this isn’t the first study to suggest that veterans’ PTSD is a major factor
